St Austell and Newquay’s MP Steve Double has secured a meeting with the Rt Hon Kwasi Kwarteng MP, Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy to explore the potential for siting a Gigafactory in Cornwall.
Commenting Steve said:
“I have supported Cornish Lithium and British Lithium since the exciting opportunities around this mineral arose shortly after I became MP. I have since met with them regularly and have also raised their progress in debates in Parliament and met with government Ministers to ensure they are considered for support in bringing their plans forward.”
“Cornwall’s history is full of cases where we extracted our precious natural resources which were then shipped elsewhere for manufacturing. This time, with lithium, I want us to secure manufacturing opportunities here in the Duchy.”
“This is why, today in Parliament, I asked the Secretary of State to meet with me to discuss the potential of siting a Gigafactory in Cornwall to manufacture the batteries for electric vehicles we will need in the future.”
“This would bring a huge boost to our local economy and create many hi-tech, well paid jobs in this growing sector.”
“I was pleased to hear the Secretary of State’s positive answer and look forward to meeting with him to explore these exciting possibilities further.”
