Conservative hopeful Steve Double is about to start the long and winding road to Westminster as he campaigns to become an MP – on foot.
He is contesting the St Austell and Newquay seat and to prove his determination to get to the House of Commons he’s decided to walk there from Cornwall this summer to raise thousands of pounds for charity.
He hopes to complete the 250 mile walk in two weeks and is looking for sponsorship from local people and businesses to boost the coffers of the Cornwall Air Ambulance and Children’s Hospice South West.
Steve said: “When I was selected as the candidate at the start of 2013 I felt I wanted to do something that would be a personal and physical challenge for me, but that was in some way linked to the political journey I’m on.
“One day I had the crazy idea that I could walk from the constituency here in Cornwall to Westminster. This idea started to develop and I am pleased to announce that on 14th June I will be setting off to walk the 250 miles to the House of Commons.’
“I have already had a tremendous response from local residents and businesses offering support and sponsorship and have even had people offering to come and join the walk for a day or two. I am very grateful to Hawkins Motors have offered the use of a vehicle to use as the support vehicle and Kingsley Village who have kicked off the fundraising with a pledge of £1,000.”
