Steve Double, Member of Parliament for St Austell, has expressed his disappointment at Barclays’ decision to close its branch in St Dennis.
Commenting Steve said:
“I am disappointed that Barclays has made the decision to close its branch in St Dennis. I have been contacted by a number of residents are concerned that there has been little or no public consultation on this matter and that once the branch closes, and that its loss will be particularly felt by the elderly, who often prefer face to face contact while banking, and those who do not have access to the internet.”
“As someone whose first job was working for a small Barclays branch in Cornwall, I know exactly the sort of role these branches play in village life. I understand that Barclays has made this decision based on footfall and usage reasons but would very much appreciate it if Barclays could engage with the local community to come to a solution leaving residents with some form of banking access going forward.”
“I am also concerned that Barclays’ handling of this matter to date goes against the spirt of the branch closure protocol, which itself came about partly as a result of a similar situation that occurred in St Agnes earlier this year.“
“I have written to Barclays, expressing my concerns, and will be meeting with management in the coming weeks to discuss how they can best work with our local communities to achieve a workable solution.”
