Steve Double, Member of Parliament for St Austell and Newquay, along with Cornwall Councillor for Par and St Blazey Gate Jordan Rowse, have welcomed the decision by Cornwall Council’s Cabinet today, to include an £8.3m investment to Phase 1 of the St Austell Resilience Regeneration (STARR) project as part of Cornwall Council’s ongoing capital project.
STARR is a flood alleviation and regeneration scheme led by Cornwall Council.
Funding is being sought for this innovative scheme aiming to work across the whole of the Par and Sandy River catchments to reduce flood risk to communities living and working in the St Austell Bay area, particularly the people of Par and St Blazey.
Commenting, Steve said:
“I am pleased to see Cornwall Council’s Cabinet today take the sensible step of providing this funding for the STARR project. I have been working towards this goal since my time as a Cabinet Member on Cornwall Council since before I was elected as MP, and have seen many times just how much this flooding affects those who live in the area, who I am sure will be delighted to see Phase 1 of the STARR project funded. I will now work with Cornwall Council to ensure the project moves forward quickly and tangible improvements are put in place as soon as possible.”
Commenting, Jordan said:
“I have been working within Cornwall Council since my election earlier this year to ensure the Cabinet is fully aware of the need for funding to go towards the STARR project. The flooding around Par and St Blazey is a historic and ongoing issue that impacts deeply on the residents who live in the affected areas and I am pleased to be working both with Cornwall Council and our MP to finally get a long term solution to this problem.”
