Steve Double, Member of Parliament for St Austell and Newquay, has welcomed details coming forward from the Government yesterday confirming military veterans will get cut-price train travel to help boost job prospects and bring them closer to family and friends.
The new railcard, available from Armistice Day this year, will help boost veterans’ job prospects and strengthen family bonds through cheaper travel.
Over 830,000 will be eligible for a third off their fares, saving veterans and their families hundreds of pounds a year.
The discount forms part of government’s new veterans strategy to support former servicemen and women.
Commenting, Steve said:
“I am delighted to see Government come through on another promise from the election as details have come forward of the new veteran’s railcard scheme.”
“People who have fought to defend our freedoms and keep us safe, deserve something back in return and this railcard is way we as a country can do more to show our appreciation to them.”
“It was good to meet with representatives of the scheme in Parliament yesterday and I look forward to continuing to work within the Government over the coming years to expand the support we offer to veterans and their families.”
