Steve Double, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for St Austell was delighted to act as a special guest umpire at the recent People and Gardens vs Eden Project charity cricket match.
People and Gardens is a Community Interest Company, based near St Austell which provides supported work for people with physical and emotional impairments through gardening and the growing and selling of vegetables.
In their fourth annual fixture the People and Gardens team beat their Eden rivals in the last over, clocking up 123 against their oppositions' 119.
Commenting Steve said, ‘Having played in the match for the Eden Team last year, it was an honour to be asked to be one of the umpires this time. It was a great game, on a stunning day, in lovely surroundings. Although the Eden Team questioned some of my decisions, I believe I was a firm but fair umpire! The People and Gardens team thoroughly deserved eking out a narrow victory with some fine performances with bat and ball.
People and Gardens perform an excellent and vital role in the community and have really made a difference to the lives of so many people. They are facing some real challenges as a result of the budget cuts from Cornwall Council but I am delighted to be able to support them and will continue to so in any way I am able.
