Steve Double, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for St Austell and Newquay today commented on the news that the Government has announced its decision to apply to the European Union to include Cornish people within the European Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities:
‘I have always been very proud to be Cornish and I know many people share my desire to preserve and promote our Cornish traditions, culture and heritage. Those of us who are lucky enough to be born in Cornwall, along with the many thousands of people who have chosen to make Cornwall their home, have always known that Cornwall is a special place and different in many ways to England. It is good news that the British Government have now recognised this.
I welcome this announcement as it has the potential to assist in furthering the cause of strengthening our Cornish identity. However, as is often the case, we need to wait for more details to establish precisely what this move will achieve. I will certainly be working with my fellow Conservatives in Cornwall and Westminster to ensure that we get the best possible outcomes for everyone in Cornwall.’
