Steve Double, Member of Parliament for St Austell and Newquay has called an urgent meeting with South West Water this week to call for a permanent solution to the sewage leak at the Caffa Mill pumping station near Passage Slip in Fowey.
Commenting, Steve said:
“I first heard about the issues while in Parliament last week and immediately contacted South West Water to ensure that everything possible was being done to resolve the issue.”
“I understand that subsequently engineers worked around the clock over the weekend to install a temporary pumping system to allow the pumping station to continue to operate without discharging into the river.”
“However what we now need is a permanent solution. I have been down to Fowey this morning and met with some of the affected residents to get up to date with the current issues and talk about the history of the site. I will be meeting with the Head of Waste Water Management tomorrow and pressing for a permanent solution that means we will not see a reoccurrence of this issue in the future. I will also be asking that the slipway, which is used by local businesses, the lifeboat and for leisure is brought back into use as soon as possible, particularly given that the summer season is now upon us.”
“I look forward to working with South West Water and the local community going forward to ensure that a sensible, practical and above all permanent solution is found for the people of Fowey.”
