Steve Double, Member of Parliament for St Austell and Newquay has joined with local residents to express concerns over the future of the old footbridge at St Austell Station after it has been announced that Network Rail are attempting to de-list it.
At present the bridge is a Grade II listed structure and designated heritage asset for St Austell but plans announced by Network Rail could see it left open to demolition.
Commenting, Steve said:
“Having lived in St Austell all of my life this bridge is to me an iconic part of St Austell. It is the first thing travellers by rail see when they come to our town and it is such a shame that National Rail have let it deteriorate to its current state.”
“This bridge is listed for a reason. It is part of St Austell’s heritage and its loss would see another part of our town’s history gone.”
“I call upon Network Rail to do the right thing and restore the bridge for passengers to use instead of letting it rot away.”
“If Network Rail will not change their mind, then I will happily work with local residents and councillors to find a way of come to a solution where the bridge will be saved and restored for future generations.”
“If anyone wants to assist then please get in touch with me at office@stevedouble.org.uk and I will keep you updated.”
