Steve Double, Member of Parliament for St Austell and Newquay, recently met with a number of Cornwall-based Arla farmer owners.
The meeting took place at Trevarrian Creamery, one of 16 Arla site locations across the UK, and provided an opportunity to discuss the key issues impacting dairy farmers in the UK, including the impact of global milk price volatility. Arla is the UK’s largest dairy company, owned by 13,500 farmers, 3,000 of whom are British.
Trevarrian Creamery produces soft, ripened cheeses, such as Brie and Camembert and during the visit, Mr Double was given a tour of the site and shown the state-of-the-art technology used to control humidification and ripening of its cheeses.
Arla has recently invested to upgrade the processes and machinery on site, reflective of the work that Arla is doing to support its farmer owners by developing innovative products to add value to the milk category.
Commenting, Steve said:
“It is important that we continue to work to strengthen the UK dairy industry. In light of continued challenges I welcomed the opportunity to speak with Arla farmer owners from the Cornwall region directly to discuss some of their most pressing concerns.”
“Arla’s Trevarrian Creamery in Cornwall is an example of UK dairy’s capacity to innovate and diversify the produce of our farmers’ milk. I look forward to continuing to work with dairy farmers in Cornwall to ensure the greatest outcomes for this important sector.”
