Steve Double, Member of Parliament for St Austell and Newquay, yesterday handed in a petition to Parliament on behalf of ladies from Mid-Cornwall affected by changes to state pension ages.
Commenting, Steve said,
“I have met with many women in mid-Cornwall who were born in the 1950’s and are going to be significantly and unfairly affected by changes to State Pension changes.”
“Since I was elected, I have raised this issue with the government several times and have been in close correspondence with Pensions Ministers over the options available to best support women who have lost out through these changes.”
“I have been disappointed with the response from the government and while I do not think that a complete reversal of the current rules is feasible, I remain committed to working with other MPs of all parties, on behalf of constituents who are affected by this policy, as part of the Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI) All Party Parliamentary Group, to reach a fair compromise here.”
This petition, which has attracted thousands of signatures across the country, shows just how many women have been affected by the changes. I hope that the sheer numbers will encourage the government to listen, think again and reach a sensible decision on what to do next here.”
