Steve Double MP welcomes report highlighting need for UK plastic bottle deposit return scheme
Steve Double, Member of Parliament for St Austell and Newquay, has welcomed the publication by the Parliamentary Environmental Audit Committee of a report about the need to protect the environment from the effects of plastic waste.
The report states that the introduction of a plastic bottle deposit return shceme is a key step in the fight against plastic pollution.
Commenting, Steve said:
“I welcome the publication of this report, which backs up what myself and other campaigners have been saying about how vital the introduction of a plastic bottle deposit return scheme.”
“In my capacity as Chair of the Protect Our Waves All Party Parliamentary Group, along with Surfers Against Sewage, I have been working to raise awareness of the many problems caused by marine litter, much of which is made up of plastics.”
“The Government has listened and I was pleased to see the Secretary of State for the Environment announce a consultation including the industry earlier this year towards bringing in a scheme.”
“This report is another step in the right direction and I will continue to do all I can to ensure the scheme, when it comes forward, has the positive impact we need to protect the beaches and marine environments around the UK.”
