Steve Double, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for St Austell and Newquay, welcomed the Prime Minister Theresa May’s pledge to shake up mental healthcare.
Commenting, Steve said:
“I have been campaigning for radical change to mental healthcare both locally and nationally.”
“Earlier this year I welcomed the announcement of the long-needed mental health inpatient unit for children and young people in Cornwall but I recognise there is still a long way to go.”
“50% of mental illness starts before the age of 14 and 75% before the age of 18. I am therefore pleased to welcome the Prime Minister’s announcement of staff trained in mental health first aid in every primary and secondary school in England and Wales. This is a vital step forward for improving mental health support, diagnosis and treatment.”
“I also welcome Theresa May’s pledge to prioritise mental illness and to tackle the injustice of mental healthcare by scrapping the flawed 1983 Mental Health Act, investing in 10,000 more NHS mental health staff, increasing medical training places by 1500 with a focus on targeting shortage specialties including psychiatry and to tackle workplace discrimination.”
“I believe this highlights that only a Conservative Government is committed to take real action on mental health.”
