Steve Double, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for St Austell and Newquay has today welcomed the news that Cornwall Council has dropped their plans for two wind turbines at Trevascus Farm near Gorran Churchtown.
The council had proposed to apply for planning permission for the two turbines as part of their green energy programme across Cornwall. However in the light of local opposition these plans have now been dropped.
Commenting on the news Steve Double said ‘I was contacted by concerned residents of Goran last summer and attended a number of meetings to support those opposed to the plans. I feel Cornwall Council should not be spending Cornish taxpayers’ money to build wind turbines that are so clearly against the wishes of local people. Cornwall Council needs to remember they exist to serve the people of Cornwall, not pursue their own pet agenda.
It is good news that these plans have been dropped but I remain concerned that the Council plan to press ahead with similar turbines near St Ewe and Grampound. I will continue to support local residents who wish to oppose these plans and make sure their voices are heard. ‘
Conservative Cornwall Councillor for the area, Cllr James Mustoe added, ‘While I was campaigning last year one of the strongest issues in the Gorran area was regarding the placement of these turbines in a prominent position near Gorran. On being elected one of the first things I did was to have a discussion with Cornwall Council officers as to why I felt this was an unsuitable site for these unnecessary turbines. I am delighted that Cornwall Council have listened to local pressure, as well as the sound reasoning of local Parliamentary Candidate Steve Double and decided to not proceed with this application.’
