The Government has today confirmed it is acting to protect British households from the spiralling costs of energy.
The new Energy Price Guarantee (EPG) will give people certainty with their bills.
The EPG will apply from 1 October and will discount the unit cost for gas and electricity use.
This guarantee, which includes the temporary suspension of green levies, means that from the 1st October a typical household will pay no more than £2500 per year for each of the next two years. This will save the typical household £1000 a year. It comes in addition to the £400 Energy Bill Support Scheme.
The scheme will start on the 1st October 2022, when Ofgem’s new price cap is due to come into effect.
HM Government will also support all business, charities and public sector organisations with their energy costs this winter, offering an equivalent guarantee for six months.
The Prime Minister also confirmed that households who do not have a mains supply of energy, such as those who live in park homes or on off grid gas or oil supplies will also receive help through a special fund.
Welcoming the news was St Austell and Newquay’s Member of Parliament Steve Double. He said:
“I am pleased to see the Prime Minister acting promptly and putting into place measures necessary to help people through what is going to be a tough winter, because of the cost of living crisis brought about by Putin’s war on Ukraine.”
“I had particularly pressed for additional support to be given to businesses, who had not had their energy prices capped, and am pleased to see this help included in the announcement as well as those who live in Park Homes”.
“As this situation continues to evolve, along with the Government’s response to it, I will do all I can to ensure Mid-Cornwall gets the support it needs.”
