Statistics highlighted by scrutinycounts.co.uk have shown that St Austell and Newquay’s Member of Parliament Steve Double contributed more to Parliamentary debates in the first two months of the year than any other MP in the South West.
The statistics show that Steve made the seventh highest number of contributions in January and February in Parliamentary debates among Conservative backbenchers nationally, and was ranked 11th overall among backbench MPs of all parties across the country.
Commenting Steve said:
“One of the reasons I decided to return to the backbenches in November last year was to be able to speak up for our constituency and Cornwall in debates in Parliament. Being the voice of St Austell and Newquay in the House of Commons has always been a huge honour.”
“I have set about this with relish and have since held debates on a number of diverse and varied subjects that are important to the residents of Mid-Cornwall, from issues such funding for Cornwall, the housing situation including second homes, local health services, fire and policing matters such as our Tri Service Safety Officers, and raising the plight of our pollack fishermen most recently.”
“These are all areas where I have been able to speak out and raise the profile of our constituency in Parliament and work towards achieving real, positive change with Government colleagues.”
“As well as this I have spoken in debates on all the big issues, such as the recent Spring Budget, and asked questions of senior figures in Government, including the Prime Minister.”
“Of course 2024 is only going to get busier, and I will continue to work hard both in Parliament and in Cornwall to ensure the voices of the people I represent are heard loud and clear.”
