Steve Double, Member of Parliament for St Austell and Newquay, has welcomed news that Cornwall Council will be putting in a length restriction on Pentewan Hill in the New Year.
This follows an incident where a B&Q lorry got stuck on the road over two days earlier this year, generating national media coverage, and a campaign from Steve, local councillors and residents to persuade Cornwall Council to find the money to implement traffic improvements.
Commenting, Steve said:
“It is great to see real progress on this issue that I know is important to the residents of Pentewan. Working with local councillor James Mustoe, my office secured substantial funds from B&Q and we persuaded Cornwall Council to match this to provide the funding required. A successful consultation on an 8 metre length restriction on Pentewan Hill has now been completed and work can progress in the New Year.”
Commenting, Cornwall Councillor for Pentewan James Mustoe said:
“I am delighted to have worked with Steve to get this scheme through and am particularly thankful for his support in persuading B&Q to provide the initial funding.”
“Cornwall Council intend to issue the construction package to the site contractors by the end of this week and it will enter their programme in the new year.”
“The new restriction should avoid large vehicles getting stuck on this hill as we saw earlier this year, and will give the police the power to prosecute anyone who ignores it.”
“I hope it will make Pentewan Village and the hill in particular safer and that the disruption regularly caused by large vehicles getting stuck will become a thing of the past.”
