Steve Double, Member of Parliament for St Austell and Newquay, has joined the Prime Minister and Secretary of State for the Environment at the launch of the 25-year Environmental Plan, which includes a major crackdown on plastic packaging on fruit, vegetables and other fresh foods.
In a speech today, the Prime Minister announced the Government will work with supermarkets to encourage them to introduce plastic-free aisles in which all food is loose.
This will give consumers the choice to make greener decisions and promote the use of less damaging plastic packaging.
Speaking from the London Wetland Centre, following the speech, Steve said:
“I was delighted to be invited to join the Prime Minister as she makes this important speech this morning.”
“Along with Surfers Against Sewage and many other campaign groups, as Chair of the Protect Our Waves All Party Parliamentary Group, I have been making the strong case to the Government to cut down on plastic waste.”
“I am pleased to see the Government is listening. We are making real progress on the issue of plastic waste and I am proud to be a part of the Government that is taking real action.”
“In particular the Prime Minister is making the unprecedented pledge to eliminate all avoidable plastic waste within a quarter of a century.”
“This is great news, but there is lots more to be done and I will continue to work to take radical steps to reduce the amount of plastic we use and that ends up in our seas and on our beaches. But we are at last winning the debate and I look forward to continuing to work with the Government to win the war against disposable plastics.”
