Steve Double, Member of Parliament for St Austell and Newquay, has met with senior South West Water officers in Newquay to see the work they are doing locally to improve their infrastructure, as well as to discuss their plans for the future.
South West Water are currently working on their largest environmental improvement programme across the South West, including:
• Making sure there's zero serious pollutions by 2025
• Targeting a year-on-year reduction in all pollutions
• Reducing spills from storm overflows to an average of 20 per year by 2025
• Achieving the region's first bathing quality status for a river
Commenting, Steve said:
“Issues with pollution of seas and rivers remain something that many local people contact me about, and it was good to meet with South West Water in Newquay to discuss what they are doing to improve their infrastructure and plans for the future.”
“The Government’s landmark Environment Act which passed earlier this year, goes further than ever before in holding water companies like South West Water accountable and making sure they do their bit in stopping pollution from getting into our rivers and seas.”
“I was pleased to hear of South West Water’s plans to continue to improve and will continue to meet regularly with them and provide further updates as they become available.
With the launch of their Waterfit plan local people have the opportunity to learn more about South West Water’s priorities going forward and I would encourage all local people who care about the cleanliness of our coastal waters to read and support their plans.”
