Steve Double, Member of Parliament for St Austell and Newquay, yesterday evening handed in petitions to the House of Commons on behalf of hundreds of residents of Mevagissey and St Blazey who are concerned about the pending closure of Lloyd’s Bank branches in their communities.
Speaking in Parliament, Steve said:
“I rise to present two petitions on behalf of the people of the village of Mevagissey and the town of St Blazey, which relate to the decision of Lloyds bank to close both its branches in those two communities. Lloyds was the last and only bank in both communities, so this decision leaves them without suitable banking facilities, putting great pressure on businesses and residents alike.”
“The petitioners therefore request the House of Commons to call upon Lloyds to reverse its decision or put alternative provision in place for those who need it most.”
Speaking this morning, Steve said:
“Along with many local residents I was very concerned about Lloyds’ decision to close its branches in Mevagissey and St Blazey. Not just their initial decision but their complete failure to listen to my subsequent concerns and act to put any sort of meaningful provision in place.”
“In particular, after consulting with the business community and Parish Council in Mevagissey, their proposed replacement with a half-baked mobile banking vehicle to visit the outskirts of the village once a week is simply not good enough, neither for the businesses or the people in the village who have for years relied on a local counter service.”
“I am in further correspondence with Lloyds about this and am pleased that the residents who signed the petitions also had their voices heard in Parliament here.”
