Steve Double, Member of Parliament for St Austell and Newquay, has secured a meeting with the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Greg Clark MP to discuss the future prospects for lithium in Cornwall.
Lithium, a key commodity used in the production of batteries and one of the rarest metals in the world has recently been discovered in the Duchy.
Speaking in Parliament today, Steve highlighted the importance of lithium in high tech markets and how important it being mined in Cornwall, providing a domestic supply for the metal in the UK, would be.
In reply the Secretary of State offered to meet with Steve to discuss how Cornwall could contribute to future lithium extraction and processing.
Speaking after the debate, Steve said:
“Lithium is increasingly important to modern day living and it is exciting that we could see Cornwall regain its industrial prominence by extracting it in the county.”
“I was pleased to highlight this with the Secretary of State today and look forward to meeting with him in the near future to discuss how we can get the very best deal from both the extraction and processing of lithium in Cornwall.”
