Steve Double, Member of Parliament for St Austell and Newquay, has welcomed the Government’s announcement this week that it will be providing Cornwall Council with nearly £2m of additional funding purely to help fill potholes.
This funding of £1,847,000, is over and above in £144 million the Government is already committed to providing in 2017 to help repair local highways.
Commenting, Steve said:
“This funding, part of over £12.4 million that the Government has allocated to the South West to fix or prevent potholes from occurring, is very welcome.”
“In Cornwall that equates to around 34,900 potholes for the next year, and that is on top of the £20,167,000 funding that the Government will be giving for local highways funding over the next year.”
“I see that some at Cornwall Council are already complaining that this funding is not enough and they have been hard done by the Government again. I would respectfully point out that perhaps if those in charge at Cornwall Council desisted from authorising unnecessary and wasteful highways projects and spending £750,000 on a useless parking consultation that no one wants, then they might find some more spare money to spend on potholes instead!”
