Steve Double, Member of Parliament for St Austell and Newquay has welcomed the weekend announcement by Prime Minister Theresa May that New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Ghana have joined the UK and Vanuatu-led Commonwealth Clean Oceans Alliance – an agreement between member states to join forces in the fight against plastic pollution.
To drive this forward, the Prime Minister has also announced a £61.4 million package of funding to boost global research and help countries across the Commonwealth stop plastic waste from entering the oceans in the first place.
Commenting, Steve said:
“It is great to see this new announcement of further funding and an agreement from Commonwealth countries to do all we can to eliminate single use plastics.”
“In a post-Brexit world it is critical that the UK continues to innovate and lead in finding solutions to the single use plastic menace, as well as living more sustainably.”
“This announcement and millions of pounds of funding from our Prime Minister shows we are committed to taking this seriously and leading the way in the Commonwealth and more in the journey to eliminating single use plastic.”
