Steve Double, Member of Parliament for St Austell and Newquay, has welcomed confirmation by Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government Sajid Javid, that the Government will shortly be launching a consultation on strengthening consumer redress in the housing market.
Commenting, Steve said:
“This is an issue I have campaigned on for some time on behalf of many local residents who feel let down by the protection offered to them when they purchase a new home.”
“It is frankly ridiculous that as it stands someone taking out a new mobile phone contract has more consumer protection than someone buying a new house.”
“That is why, last year I held an Adjournment Debate in Parliament calling for more measures to be considered, particularly for the introduction of an Ombudsman to oversee the complaints process for new home-owners, which is currently unclear and convoluted.”
“I am pleased that the Government has listened and is taking action. I will await the results of the consultation with interest and will continue to push for a better deal for new home-owners both in Cornwall and across the country.”
