Steve Double, Member of Parliament for St Austell and Newquay, has welcomed today's release of the unemployment figures for August which have again shown a month on month and year on year fall for the constituency.
Commenting Steve said:
“There are now only 716 people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance or Universal Credit in Mid-Cornwall, compared to 972 in August last year, and 736 in July of this year. This is important as these figures don't just show the traditional growth of seasonal employment which we see over the summer every year, but a sustained fall in unemployment throughout the year. There are now 52% less people unemployed in St Austell and Newquay than in 2010.”
“These great figures for our constituency go along with national figures which show employment rose 42,000 this quarter, with the employment rate returning to the record high of 73.5% and long-term unemployment falling to its lowest level in six years, and 400,000 more people in work than a year ago.”
"This shows our one nation government is continuing to deliver for people in all sections of society, helping them succeed and achieve their full potential."
“However, despite this good news there is no room for complacency. We need to continue to not only create more jobs but attract the right type of employment opportunities that will increase local wages and provide career opportunities for our young people. I will continue to work to do all I can to attract investment and create a positive environment for businesses to grow in mid-Cornwall.”
