Steve Double, Conservative Candidate for St Austell and Newquay, has welcomed the announcement of new Government funding to support a package of rail improvements.
Commenting on this week’s announcement, which will see new investment in Cornwall’s rail network, including the construction of a new train maintenance depot creating up to seventy new jobs in Cornwall, Steve said,
“St Austell and Newquay, and Cornwall in general can only benefit from this multi million pound package of rail improvements, which will lift the local economy, create new jobs, provide an upgraded sleeper service and crucially result in faster train journeys for visitors and local people alike.”
“I must pay tribute to the sterling work of our present local Conservative MPs, who, combined with the long term efforts of the Cornwall Council transport team and the Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly Local Enterprise Partnership, made an excellent and compelling case for this investment. If elected in 2015 I will continue to work with my Conservative colleagues, both locally and in Westminster, to press the case for providing Cornwall with the very best in transport infrastructure.”
The Prime Minister, David Cameron, who was in Penzance to make the announcement, said:
‘Ensuring that we have first class infrastructure across Britain is a crucial part of our long-term economic plan to back business, create jobs and provide a brighter future for hardworking people. This investment, which will boost the local economy and improve connectivity, is great news for Cornwall, the south-west and beyond.’
