Steve Double, Member of Parliament for St Austell and Newquay, has met with the CEO of South West Water, Susan Davey, to discuss the work the water company is doing to improve Cornwall’s sewage infrastructure.
The meeting follows the release of a report by the Parliamentary Environmental Audit Committee which calls for more joined up working to crack down on pollution in our waterways, and the passing of the Government’s landmark Environment Act.
Commenting, Steve said:
“Following the recent passing of the Environment Bill into law, I was pleased to have a really positive meeting with Susan Davey, CEO of South West Water in Parliament. She was able to update me on the work being done in our constituency to invest in our water and sewage infrastructure. We have an aging water infrastructure in mid-Cornwall and it is vital that SW Water continue to invest and upgrade the system.”
“I am regularly contacted by local residents concerned about the number of sewage discharges that currently happen. I know this is a major concern for local people therefore I was pleased that we also discussed the plan to reduce the number of sewage discharges, following the measures introduced in the new Environment Bill. It was encouraging to learn there is now a plan to reduce the number of sewage discharges in our area by 75% by the end of this year.”
“This is real progress, that I am pleased to see happening as a direct result of the new legislation, and will continue to work with colleagues both locally and in Parliament to clear our seas and waterways up.”
